Is volunteering really necessary for college admissions?

There is lot of talk about volunteering etc... while I understand its really good to do something that interest you and help you build story but how far is it really mandatory from college admission evaluation point of view.

      It's not strictly mandatory. However, I think most people will be able to find some way to volunteer in a way that is interesting to them and colleges certainly like to see that. For example, I'm interested in healthcare, so I work with a migrant farm worker health clinic in the summer. Some kind of volunteer activity should be easy to fit in your schedule. An hour once a month is still something!
